Music mogul Jay-Z has launched a new legal battle, filing a defamation lawsuit against the anonymous woman who accused him of rape, along with her lawyers Tony Buzbee and David Fortney. The suit, submitted Monday in federal court in Alabama, alleges that the accuser and her legal team knowingly pursued false claims against the rapper despite evidence to the contrary.
The accuser, identified as Jane Doe, initially filed a lawsuit last year alleging that Jay-Z, born Shawn Carter, and Sean "Diddy" Combs raped her when she was 13 years old at a 2000 MTV Video Music Awards after-party. However, inconsistencies in her account came to light following a televised interview, and last month, Jane Doe voluntarily withdrew her lawsuit without explanation.
In his new lawsuit, Jay-Z asserts that Jane Doe privately admitted to representatives of his legal team that her allegations were fabricated. The suit further claims that her attorney, Tony Buzbee, "pushed" her to proceed with the false accusations. However, the lawsuit does not clarify how this admission was made or to whom specifically it was given.
Jay-Z’s legal complaint accuses the woman and her lawyers of defamation, malicious prosecution, and other related claims, arguing that the false accusations caused significant reputational harm and financial losses, including over $20 million in damages to his entertainment company, Roc Nation.
Tony Buzbee responded swiftly to the lawsuit, denying the allegations and questioning the authenticity of the supposed admission. In a public statement, Buzbee claimed: “After speaking with Jane Doe today, it appears that the quotes attributed to her in the lawsuit are completely made up, or they spoke to someone who isn’t Jane Doe. This is just another attempt to intimidate and bully this poor woman that we will deal with in due course. We won’t be bullied or intimidated by frivolous cases.”
Adding another layer to the dispute, Jay-Z had previously sued Buzbee in Los Angeles, alleging that a letter sent by the attorney outlining his client’s allegations amounted to extortion. In that ongoing case, a judge has indicated a likelihood of dismissing the extortion claim while allowing a separate defamation claim to proceed.
Jane Doe Makes New Allegations
In support of her defense, Jane Doe submitted an affidavit in the Los Angeles case with new allegations. Now, the Jane Doe, who remains hidden by court order of the justice system claims that two individuals identifying themselves as investigators working with Jay-Z’s attorney approached her at her home, pressuring her to recant her allegations—an action she says she refused. Additionally, Jane Doe alleges she withdrew her lawsuit out of fear, concerned about public backlash and threats from Jay-Z's supporters.
Jay-Z’s Alabama lawsuit highlights contradictions in Jane Doe’s original account, particularly discrepancies revealed during her NBC News interview. For example, Jane Doe had claimed she contacted her father after the alleged incident, but her father publicly stated he had no memory of such an event and described it as something unforgettable. Additionally, she said she interacted with a musician at the after-party who records showed was touring elsewhere at the time.
Jay-Z's legal team maintains that the allegations severely damaged his reputation and professional interests, including losses to Roc Nation. The suit seeks to hold both the plaintiff and her attorneys accountable for what Jay-Z’s camp characterizes as deliberate and malicious legal action based on fabricated claims.
As this latest chapter unfolds, it further intensifies the already heated legal saga involving Jay-Z, Buzbee, and several ongoing lawsuits related to Sean Combs. Diddy, meanwhile, faces over three dozen civil lawsuits and remains in custody on federal criminal charges, with his trial set to begin in May 2025.
